Andries Botha: Open Air Archive, in the garden of the Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde (State Ethnographic Museum), Leiden

Some time ago, on one of the last summer days,

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

i went to Leiden to see Open Air Archive

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

by South African artist Andries Botha (1952) for

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

study and to write a short article about it

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

for Villa La Repubblica. He made the work in 2000-2001

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

for the Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde (State Museum for Ethnography)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

to reflect on its collection. During a ‘safari

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

in The Netherlands he collected small items, cast them

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

in aluminium and presented them outside the museum as

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

ethnographic objects with more or less science based explanatory

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

texts which try to delve into the Dutch psyche.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The texts are in Afrikaans, an African language derived

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

from Dutch, which to Dutch visitors has a special

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

significance. It is strange for Dutch visitors to be

Andries Botha 15

taught about their own tribal characteristics in Afrikaans.

To read some of the texts (and to see some more pictures)

Andries Botha 17

see the article on the Villa La Repubblica blog (in Dutch).

For here on the Next Door blog

Andries Botha 19

i made a choice of the objects as they

Andries Botha 20

are presented by Botha. Look at them and

Andries Botha 21

think about how Dutch they are. And

Andries Botha 22

beware of the dog shit!
